Dhamekh Stupa

Dhamekh Stupa is one of the most important sights in Sarnath, because it is the exact spot where Buddha gave his first sermon. The stupa is built in a cylindrical shape that rises around 43m and the diameter of the stupa is 28m. The Dhamek Stupa was first built by the great Mauryan king Ashoka in 249 BCE, later it was redeveloped in 500 CE.

It is maintained by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India).
