Group of Monuments at Pattadakal UNESCO
Situated on the banks of the Malaprabha River, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to the richness of Chalukya architecture during the 7th and 8th centuries and is famous for its intricately carved temples. The temples at Pattadakal testify to the richness and timeless splendor of Chalukya architecture. The temples are decorated with exquisite artwork. Along with nine Shiva temples, there is a temple dedicated to Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara.
Jain Temple
Jain Temple is an ancient temple located in Pattadakal. It is one of the major places to visit in Pattadakal. The Jain temple was built during the 9th century, Built in the Dravidian style, the temple has a large Mukha Mandapa followed by the Rangamandapa and the Garbhagriha. There are 16 round shaped pillars in the Mukha Mandap built on a high platform. Life-sized elephant statues welcome tourists on either side of the gate. The Mukha Mandap has stone benches with back supports. The outer walls of the rear support have fine carvings of human figures, dwarves, Shankhanidhi and Padmanidhi and Kalashas.
Kashi Vishwanatha Temple
At a distance of 400 meters from Pattadakal Bus Stand, inside the temple complex, adjacent to the Mallikarjuna Temple, is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, an amazing 8th century temple built in the Nagara style. It is believed that this is the last Hindu temple built in Pattadakal monuments. Only the sanctum sanctorum and antarala are left in the temple and the remaining parts have collapsed. The sanctum sanctorum is supported by two pillars and has a Shivling made of black stone. At the entrance of the sanctum there is a carving of Garuda holding serpents. There are fine sculptures of female figures in different postures under the door.
Papanatha Temple
Originally to be built in the Nagara style, this temple was later built in the Dravidian style of architecture. Various beautiful carvings can be seen on the walls of the temple, including depictions of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located along the banks of the Malaprabha River. There are 10 major temples in Pattadakal, all dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temples contain elements of both South Indian (Dravidian) and North Indian (Nagara) styles of architecture. The timeless beauty and historical relevance of these temples saw them acquire the status of a world heritage site in 1987.
