Maheshwar Fort

Maheshwar Fort is an ancient fort located in Maheshwar city of Madhya Pradesh. Situated on the banks of river Narmada, it is one of the major heritage places in Madhya Pradesh, and one of the major tourist places in Maheshwar. Popularly known as Holkar Fort, Maheshwar Fort was built by the Holkar dynasty in the 18th century AD. It was once the residence of Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar, the famous queen of Malwa, hence the fort is also called Ahilya Qila or Queen's Fort. This palace is the pinnacle of Maratha architecture. One can marvel at the chhatris as well as the palace which houses a beautiful life-sized statue of Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar sitting on a throne. There are also several temples dedicated to various incarnations of Lord Shiva on the premises of the fort.
