Tashi Viewpoint
Situated 8 km from central Gangtok, Tashi Viewpoint is a scenic beauty from where travelers can enjoy the spectacular view of Mount Sinilochu and Mount Kangchenjunga. It was built between 1914 and 1963 by King Tashi Namgyal of Sikkim and that is how the place got its name. Developed by the tourism department of Sikkim and situated at an ideal location, Tashi Viewpoint offers a beautiful view of the snow-capped mountains. The place also serves as a great picnic spot for local as well as foreign tourists.
Tsomgo Lake
Situated amidst mountains at an altitude of 12400 feet above sea level, Tsomgo Lake is one of the few high altitude lakes located on the Gangtok-Nathu La highway in India. Tsomgo Lake is a glacial lake that receives water from the melting snow of the surrounding mountains. This glacial lake is famous for its color changing water. A dazzling aquamarine lake is visible during monsoons, while in winter it freezes into a translucent cover of ice. As the summer season approaches in mid-May, the periphery of this lake is laden with a thousand blooming flowers that give the water a riot of vibrant colours.
Gangtok Ropeway
Known as one of the top thrilling things to do in Gangtok, the Gangtok ropeway offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the valley below. The double cable zig back ropeway can carry 24 passengers and covers a distance of 2 km. Usually, the cable cars are full, and you have to wait in line for your turn, but the gorgeous views of the Kangchenjunga peaks are totally worth the wait.
Hanuman Tok
Hanuman Tok is a very famous temple in Gangtok which is named after Lord Hanuman and is maintained by the Indian Army. Situated at an altitude of 7,200 feet, the Regal Temple is associated with the Kanchenjunga Peak which is the third highest peak in the world. With a height of 1780 meters, there is a wonderful view of Mount Kangchenjunga from here. Established in 1991, the Himalayan Zoological Park is the first of its kind located in the north-eastern part of India. The park meets all the requirements of a zoo where the fauna is kept under regular conditions and protected without disturbing them. The park is home to a wide variety of fauna, including snow leopard cat, goral, Himalayan palm civet, Himalayan Red Panda, Himalayan Monal Pheasant, Crimson-horned Pheasant, and Himalayan Black Bear.
Nathu La Pass
Nathula, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, is a mountain pass in the Himalayan peaks that connects Sikkim and China. Located at 14,450 feet above sea level on the Indo-Tibetan border, Nathu La is one of the most important Himalayan passes in the country. Nathu means 'hearing ear', and La means 'near'. Nathula is one of the three open trade border posts between India and China and is famous for its picturesque beauty and scenic surroundings. The temperature here remains low for most parts of the year, and it becomes a tourist attraction during summers.
Rumtek Monastery
Rumtek Monastery is one of the largest and most important monasteries of Sikkim, situated on top of a hill, 23 km from Gangtok. The magnificent Rumtek Monastery has a beautiful temple and a monastery for monks, which was established with the aim of spreading Buddhist teachings around the world. Surrounding the lofty structure is a walkway on which monks, pilgrims and visitors take a kora (a circuitous circumambulation of the monastery). The splendid Rumtek Monastery has preserved a golden stupa and several other sculptures that belong to the 16th Karmapa. Apart from storing some of the world's unique religious texts, it also serves as a storehouse of many unique items. The huge prayer hall inside the astonishing monastery is a sight to behold which is decorated with splendid murals, sculptures and thangkhas.
